Campsites
Havana Glen Park
Havana Glen Park in Montour Falls, NY provides excellent outdoor opportunities including camping facilities, ball fields, playgrounds, and a short scenic hike through Havana Glen.
The park contains Eagle Cliff Falls along with various species of rare native New York State plants and has been classified as an important area for birding with over 100 species documented here making it perfect for hiking and exploring.
Goundry Hill State Forest
Goundry Hill State Forest in Beaver Dams, NY has no developed camping sites, however, at-large primitive camping is allowed in this unit. Except within 150 feet of any road, trail, spring, stream, pond, other body of water, or otherwise prohibited.
From here you can hike the Finger Lakes Trail: South Bradford and Goundry Hill State Forests, a moderately challenging 12.6-miles point-to-point hike. Which takes an average of 5 h 54 min to complete.
Finger Lakes RV Resort
Finger Lakes RV Resort in Hector, NY is an adult-oriented, peaceful RV park located right in the heart of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail with two wineries and a diner adjacent to the property.
Their spacious sites feature full hookups, a gravel patio, and a large yard. Each site also includes a picnic table and a fire ring.
Smith Memorial Park
Just 8 miles north of Watkins Glen is Smith Memorial Park in Hector, NY. Here you’ll find wooded & lakefront campsites, swimming, boat launch, dumping station & hot showers. There are also walking trails on the property.
Watkins Glen State Park
Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous State Park in the region. Not only will you find tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities, and an Olympic-size pool. There are 19 waterfalls and 9 great trails. Camping is available from early May to mid-October.
The Gorge Trail winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. This 0.7-mile loop trail is considered moderately challenging and takes an average of 24 minutes to complete. The best times to visit this trail are May through October. Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.
The Watkins Glen South Rim Trail is a 2.6-miles out-and-back trail. It’s considered moderately challenging and takes an average of 1 h 21 min to complete. The best times to visit this trail are April through October. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Southern Seneca Lake Serenity
Southern Seneca Lake Serenity in Watkins Glen, NY is perfect for the camping purist that thrives on pitching their own tent. This half-acre property has nearly 200 feet of gorgeous lake frontage. The site features a level tent site, fire pit, picnic table, porta-potty, small stream, shade, and trees.
The best hiking can be found less than three miles away at Watkins Glen State Park.
Sugar Hill Recreation Area + Sugar Hill State Forest
Sugar Hill Recreation Area in Watkins Glen, NY is the largest designated camping area on Sugar Hill State Forest. This nine-acre open field has a limited number of fire rings and picnic tables. Other facilities there include a picnic area with picnic tables, a pavilion, an accessible horse-mounting platform, and open horse stalls, during summer months a restroom with potable water is available. All facilities are carry in-carry out.
The gate is opened to vehicle traffic, and the water is turned on, from the 3rd Monday in May through the 3rd Monday in October of each year.
Fifteen additional designated campsites are located throughout Sugar Hill State Forest. In addition, at-large primitive camping is allowed in this unit, except within 150 feet of any road, trail, spring, stream, pond, other body of water, or otherwise prohibited. Here you’ll also find five Adirondack-style lean-to’s, at four different locations. Lean-to’s must be shared to their capacity on a first-come, first-use basis, with no exclusive reservation allowed.
Camping for more than three nights or in groups of ten or more requires a permit from a Forest Ranger. No trash pickup is provided. Sugar Hill State Forest is home to the 12-thousand-acre Six Nations Trail System. Here you’ll find the Schyler County: Sugar Hill Trail. This 3.7-mile loop trail is considered easy. It takes an average of 1 h 33 min to complete and is open year-round, but can get muddy during the rainy season. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Clute Memorial Park & Camping
Clute Memorial Park & Camping in Watkins Glen, NY offers tent sites, dock rentals, and full hook-up sites with electric (20, 30, and 50 amp), water, sewer, and cable. Here you’ll find tennis courts, a soccer field, swimming and bathhouses, picnic tables, a children’s playground, a skate park, and more!
Less than a five-minute drive away is Watkins Glen State Park where you can hike the Gorge Trail without your pup, or the Watkins Glen South Rim Trail with your dog on a leash. Additional outdoor activities include a boat launch adjacent to Clute Park along the Seneca / Erie Barge Canal.
Lake Grove Park
Lake Grove Park in Alpine, NY has boat rentals, cabins, and campsites on the shores of Cayuta Lake. In this setting, the park allows campers the opportunity to play and the solitude to rest. We strive to excel in all the services we provide.
The Catharine Valley Trail North is one of the most accessible trails on the list. This 4.5-miles out-and-back trail takes an average of 1 h 20 min to complete. The trailhead is on the Watkins Glen High School grounds. There are 2 designated accessible spaces in the paved parking lot off of 12th Street at the north end of the trail. Both of them are van-accessible with a striped access aisle.
The majority of the trail is estimated to be in the gentle grade category (3% or less). All-terrain tires or motorized equipment may be needed for the mostly unpaved surface type. There are benches and picnic tables along the route for resting.
Cabins
KOA Camping Resort
Most campers are familiar with Kampgrounds of America, the world’s largest system of privately held campgrounds. KOA Camping Resort in Watkins Glen, NY is the top-rated family campground with more than 35 Camping Cabins and Deluxe Cabins, full-featured BIG RIG RV sites, and free wifi. Touring RVers will love luxurious Sunset Acres, the quiet side of the park, where some of the sites have private gazebos. Adventure-seeking families may prefer to be close to Seneca Thrills, a family fun center. With an outdoor pool, indoor pool, spa, and fitness center, gigantic pirate ship playground, giant water slide, Army truck rides, and more.
Less than a five-minute drive away is Watkins Glen State Park where you can hike the Gorge Trail without your pup, or the Watkins Glen South Rim Trail with your dog on a leash.
Rustic Log Cabins
Originally built in the 1920s, Rustic Log Cabins in Hector, NY is one of the oldest lodging establishments in the area. Open May through October the view from the grounds takes in an apple orchard, rolling vineyards, and Seneca Lake.
All four spacious cabins have electricity, hardwood floors, a fireplace, table, chairs, comfortable beds, dressers, stove, and fridge. Two of the cabins will accommodate three people and the other two will accommodate up to six.
The South Slope Trail is an easy 1.1-mile out-and-back trail near Hector, New York. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 27 min to complete. This trail is great for hiking and walking, and it’s unlikely you’ll encounter many other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
The Vineyard Villas
At The Vineyard Villas in Burdett, NY you can wake up to the panoramic view of Seneca lake and the surrounding wineries. Here you’ll find one bedroom two-story villas with a deck and balcony. Fully-equipped kitchens are available if you decide to make your own meals, as well as an outdoor grill.
The best hiking near Burdett is in the Finger Lakes National Forest. Here you’ll find 12 different easy and moderate trails to enjoy. The Interloken Trail is an 11.3 miles point-to-point trail and is considered moderately challenging. It takes an average of 3 h 54 min to complete. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. While the Finger Lakes Gorge Trail is an easy 2.3-mile out-and-back that takes an average of an hour to complete. This is a popular trail for birding, hiking, and walking. Both trails allow dogs on leashes. The best times to visit these trails are April through September.
Paradise Park Campground
Paradise Park Campground in Reading, NY offers 160 acres of wooded and open space. Along with a well-stocked store, clean facilities, and convenient hook-ups. Kids can enjoy many activities: ping pong, volleyball, the arcade, badminton, the playground, miniature golf, the archery practice range, and even join in on the fun of a hayride! The whole family will enjoy swimming in the Olympic Heated Pool.

Cool-Lea Campground
Cool-Lea Campground in Odessa, NY is great for family camping. There are cabins, a cottage, and a camper available along with tent and RV sites. Guests can enjoy boating, fishing, or canoeing on Cayuta Lake. This fishing paradise is known to have Largemouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Brown Bullhead, and more flourishing in the crystal clear waters.
The kids will love the playground, game room, pavilion, walking trails, and hayrides. Nearby you can plan a short but moderately challenging hike to Eagle Cliffs Falls in Havana Glen Park. Dogs are welcome on leashes on this 0.3-miles out-and-back trail. The best time to visit is May through October.
Catharine Cottages
Catharine Cottages in Montour Falls, NY offers four private and comfortable cottages on Catharine Creek. The cabin comes with everything you need wifi, AC, a full bathroom, mini fridge, microwave, and firewood on property. At this pet-friendly property, you can listen to the soothing sounds of Catharine Creek from your private porch.
We highly recommend Eagle Cliffs Falls in Havana Glen Park or the Gorge Trail in Watkins Glen State Park for anyone who wants to retreat into nature.
Spring’s Retreat
Escape the hustle and bustle of life at Spring’s Retreat in Montour Falls, NY. This 2-story cabin is surrounded by woods and wildlife and is equipped with a full kitchen, barbeque, fire pit, and water garden.
For an easy hike try Willow Walk Trail at the nearby Catharine Creek Wildlife Management Area. This 2.4-miles out-and-back trail is open year-round and takes an average of 41 min to complete. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Lakeside Resort
Choose from cabins, the motel, and the Lodge at the Lakeside Resort in Watkins Glen, NY. This 30-acre property gives you some space to breathe and a quiet place to relax with walking trails, small waterfalls, and beautiful Seneca lake views.
All of the rooms are clean and comfortable and have a coffee machine, microwave, small refrigerator, private bathroom, a flat-screen TV with cable channels, and more.
Watkins Glen State Park is one of the most well-known parks in the region. Within five miles, the glen’s stream features 19 waterfalls viewable from the 9 hiking trails.
Seneca Heights Cabins
At Seneca Heights Cabins in Watkins Glen, NY you’ll find two charming cabins perfect for a romantic getaway. Here you’ll find the comforts of home including an electric fireplace, ceiling fans, and a small kitchenette area that includes a fridge, microwave, and hot drink facilities. Outside, in the communal area, you’ll find the firepit, barbecues, and full bathroom facilities. This pet-friendly property also has a pond for guests to enjoy.
Located less than three miles south of Watkins Glen State Park this is your best bet for hiking in the area.
Seneca Lodge
The Seneca Lodge in Watkins Glen, NY has been a landmark for vacationers, sportsmen, and racing enthusiasts for more than 50 years. The Log Cabins include a private bath and are available with one bed or two. Each has a large family room, fireplace, kitchen, and a front porch. The four-bedroom Log Cabin fills quickly, so make reservations early. There are also two 2 chalet-style A-frames available with three bedrooms, a family room, a kitchen, and a small front porch. The Motel offers rooms with a single king bed, 2 double beds, or 2 queen beds. All accommodations have cable tv, wifi, and ac/heat.
Located less than a mile south of Watkins Glen State Park this is your best bet for hiking in the area.
Scottish Glen Bed & Breakfast
Scottish Glen Bed & Breakfast in Dundee, NY hosts two bedrooms that overlook Seneca Lake. The Waterfront Cottage/Cabin is a post and beam construction from an 1860s barn, rebuilt on the waterfront. The Cottage sleeps 6 in 2 rustic lofts, has a 50-foot dock for fishing, and swimming, a full kitchen, a wood-burning stone fireplace, and a row boat available.
This is a family-friendly property where guests can enjoy a tennis court, picnicking on the grounds, 30 acres of woods for hiking, and a lakefront area. A delicious country breakfast is served each morning and their extensive patio provides a wonderful lake view to watch an early sunrise.
Back Achers Campsites & Cottages
Back Achers Campsites & Cottages is the only private campground facility located on beautiful Seneca Lake with private lake frontage. They offer cottage rentals, RV sites, and tent camping. Along with rowboat rentals, paddle boat rentals, and boat hoist rentals. Three of their cottages feature a dock and hoist for guest use.
Sugar Hill State Forest is a 30-minute drive away. The Finger Lakes Trail to South Rim Trail is perfect for a more experienced hiker. This 11.3-miles point-to-point trail is considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 4 h 50 min to complete. This trail has great views and is perfect for those seeking solitude.
Market Street
Shop, eat, and drink along Market Street in the heart of Corning’s Gaffer District, where you’ll find independently owned local shops, cafés, restaurants, and places to grab your favorite local beverage along this quaint, tree-lined street. Learn more about the Gaffer District’s gorgeous 19th-century buildings through their Buildings Alive self-guided historic architecture tour. For your home away from home, check out the Radisson Hotel Corning, conveniently located at the east end of Market Street, or experience a stay at Hilton Garden Inn Corning, next to the Corning Museum of Glass, and a short walk into the town center.

The Corning Museum of Glass was involved from concept to reality on Netflix’s Blown Away, a competition series featuring the art of glassmaking (tip: The Studio’s Enhanced Glassblowing experience is the closest you can get to a Blown Away fan experience!)
Rockwell Museum
Housed in the beautifully restored 19th-century historic Old City Hall in Corning, The Rockwell Museum is the only Smithsonian Affiliate museum in Upstate New York. Featuring a unique collection of over 5,000 works of fine art representing the American experience through the work of American artists, the diverse collection includes a mix of nineteenth-century paintings, historic bronzes, Native American objects, twentieth-century modernists, illustration art, and contemporary photography. Tip: Purchase a Combination Ticket to access the Rockwell and the Corning Museum of Glass! Take the free shuttle between the two museums for an easy commute!
Something to do no matter the Season
No matter the season, there is always something happening in Corning! Visitors and locals can enjoy the farmers market every Thursday during the summer and fall. Travelers from around the country and region travel in for June’s Pride celebrations. The popular Wine Glass Marathon in the fall is booked up with runners quickly, bringing everyone together to cheer them along. Sparkle is the highlight of the winter holiday season when the Parade of Lights kicks off on the first Saturday after Thanksgiving every year. Then, there are festivals showcasing artisans, musicians, and so much more!
Spot “Little Joe”
The official symbol for Corning is the gaffer, and you can spot “Little Joe,” the gaffer, on the Little Joe Tower. A gaffer, or hot glass worker, is the fitting symbol for Corning as it pays homage to the glass-making history here and has become an icon of the Crystal City.
Wine Trails
Corning is just a short drive from Finger Lakes Wine Country’s three incredible wine trails. The southern tips of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and the Seneca Lake Wine Trail are approximately 30 minutes away, and the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail is less than an hour away.
The Village
In the summer, the Village of Hammondsport is bustling with lake house residents and vacationers who enjoy the village’s small-town feel and welcoming community. There is live music and art shows in the park, as well as boat shows and other festivities to engage locals and visitors alike. Depot Park is a popular hangout spot for beachgoers and boaters and a beautiful place to take in the sunsets.
In the winter, the village is a bit quieter and still, and reminiscent of those beloved holiday movies, with sweet twinkling lights and cute shops and decor.
This charming downtown also offers independently- and locally-owned shops and restaurants surrounding the picturesque Pulteney Square and gazebo. Just a few steps away are the shores of Keuka Lake at Depot Park. Stop into local favorites like Crooked Lake Ice Cream for more than ice cream; come for a light breakfast, espresso drinks, or lunch sandwiches and salads. Want something a bit more upscale? Make a reservation at The Park Inn restaurant for seasonal farm-to-table dishes and book a stay in any one of the romantic and cozy rooms upstairs. Other great spots to check out in the village is the Irish Maloney’s Pub, a casual community hangout for drinks and meet-ups, and Vern’s Bakery for fresh-baked goods and some of the biggest croissants you will ever see!
Antiquing
Antique lovers will find a lot of cute shops for treasure hunting. Right in the village are Patina and Opera House Antiques. A short drive away, just on the edge of the village, is Crooked Lake Antiques. Further up off West Lake Road are Stone View Barn and Wild Goose Chase Antiques in Pulteney. Kelley’s Korner Antiques and Collectibles is further up NY-54 on the East side of Keuka Lake.
Museums
Learn the history of the pioneer aviator, “Father of Naval Aviation,” and the “Fastest Man on Earth” while exploring the priceless collection of artifacts at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum. The museum covers early aviation as well as the inventions of Glenn H. Curtiss, including motorcycles, bicycles, boats, and different aircrafts.
Learn about the Finger Lakes region’s boat-building heritage at the unique Finger Lakes Boating Museum. The museum offers a collection of over 200 antique boats, preserving the vintage art and craftsmanship behind boat building.
Wineries and Craft Beverage Producers
Hammondsport is home to wineries that pair delicious wine with amazing views of Keuka Lake; Ravines Wine Cellars, Weis Vineyard, Point of The Bluff, Domaine LeSeurre, Keuka Springs, McGregor Vineyards, Hunt Country, and Heron Hill Winery are just a few.
If you want to kick off your wine experience with a bit of history about the evolution of wine in our region, make sure to visit Dr. Konstantin Frank. This winery, located near Hammondsport, was responsible for revolutionizing winemaking in the United States when Dr. Konstantin Frank, a Ukrainian immigrant, successfully developed a method for growing Vinifera, or European wine grapes, in Upstate New York. After 300 years of failed attempts to introduce Vinifera to colder climates, Dr. Frank revolutionized the winemaking landscape the region is known for today. Still, we highly recommend checking out the list on the Keuka Lake Wine Trail website and exploring the Craft Beverage Trail.
Pleasant Valley Wine Company
Visit the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes, located just outside the Village of Hammondsport. It offers historic tours of its property dating back to 1860. Pleasant Valley Wine Company, known for its Great Western Champagne brand, survived the prohibition years by selling sacramental and medicinal wine while sitting on an inventory of 70,000 cases that couldn’t be sold.
Watkins Glen State Park and Other Hikes
One of the most enchanting places for a leisurely hike in New York State is Watkins Glen State Park. Located steps from Watkins Glen’s main street, the two-mile Gorge Trail boasts 19 cascading waterfalls. Visitors can also hike the rim trails overlooking the 200-ft cliffs from above. The state park is closed during the winter months. However, hikers and outdoor lovers can still explore by visiting the year-round Catherine Valley, which allows visitors to experience the scenic beauty and historic charm of the glacially carved valley south of Seneca Lake. This 12-mile trail extends from the Village of Watkins Glen to Horseheads and follows an abandoned railroad and canal towpath corridors, passing through various wildlife habitats. The easy-to-navigate trail is perfect for walking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing.
Watkins Glen International & Auto Racing History
Also known as “The Glen,” this road course racetrack hosts NASCAR and IMSA, among other year-round auto racing events. Watkins Glen International is also home to the annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival. Watkins Glen is noted as the Birthplace of American Road Racing. Don’t miss the Grand Prix Festival in September, or visit the International Motor Racing Research Center to learn more about the town’s legacy of auto racing. Watkins Glen International is also one of the best camping experiences for motorsports fans, with “camping weekend” events hosted throughout the year.
Downtown
You can find the scenic Seneca Lake pier on the south end of Seneca Lake, and from here, you can take a sail on the True Love or go on an excursion with Captain Bill. Explore the different locally owned and independent restaurants, cafes, shops, and bars. What could be better than waking up to the beautiful views of Seneca Lake while staying at the exceptional Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel, named “Best Waterfront Hotel in the Nation” by USA Today. Be sure to stop in at Lucky Hare Bar and Grill for a bite and some great brew (bonus: on warmer days, there’s plenty of seating on the outdoor deck by the lake)!
Seneca Lake Wine Trail
Watkins Glen is in a prime location for discovering and tasting your way through the Seneca Lake Wine Trail member wineries. Seneca Lake is the deepest of the lakes, moderating the local climate and making for ideal temperatures for growing grapes. When visiting a Seneca Lake Wine Trail member winery, you are guaranteed to enjoy wine made from grapes grown in the Seneca Lake AVA. Must visits include Lakewood Vineyard, Glenora Wine Cellars (also home to Veraisons Restaurant and a 30-room Inn overlooking the vineyards and lake), Wagner Vineyards (also home to Wagner Valley Brewing and The Ginny Lee Café), Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards, and J.R. Dill Winery, just to name a few!
Hector Falls
Driving along the east side of Seneca Lake, just a mile and a half north of Watkins Glen on Route 414, you will see one of the region’s most beautiful roadside attractions, Hector Falls. Witness this magical, cascading waterfall right from the comfort of your car. You can see the lower falls that feed into the lake from Seneca Lake. Note: this is a roadside waterfall. Please be cautious of fast-moving vehicles when stopping for views and photos.
Check out J.R. Dill’s Wine Bar on Franklin St. Here, you can enjoy a leisurely environment, some tasty cocktails, and J.R. Dill wine selections. Graft Wine and Cider Bar serves up some hearty meals that are seasonally and locally inspired. Pair with their great selection of local ciders. Looking for some freshly baked bagels for a morning bite? Check out The Blackberry Inn Kitchen – though arrive early as these delicious bagels go fast! And if you are looking for a delicious cup of coffee, there are some really great options to choose from, starting with Seneca Sunrise Coffee, right in Watkins Glen, or North New York in Montour Falls, and also Overlook Coffee Company in Burdett – as a starter list! Lastly, if you want a nice brunch and breakfast spot, we recommend Elf and The Oak, Jonny’s Kitchen, Stonecat Cafe (seasonal – closed in the winter), and Ryan Williams Vineyard for brunch and lunch…and wine! Agri-tourism is a travel trend that focuses on visiting farms, dairies, and ranches, to get a behind-the-scenes look at how they operate. Happy cows make the best cheese and on this trail, you’ll discover a delicious variety of locally-sourced artisan cheeses. From cuddling cows to learning about the cheese-making process, there’s an assortment of activities for all ages at these working farms. Sunset View Creamery
Sunset View Creamery in Odessa, New York offers a selection of artisan cheeses made using fresh milk from their century-old family-owned and operated dairy farm. You can go on a self-guided tour of the cheesemaking facility, meet the dairy cows, then visit the shop for a tasting of cheese curds, fresh mozzarella, and more. Shop other locally-produced food items in their farm store or schedule a cow cuddling session!
Shtayburne Farm
On the western shore of Seneca Lake in Rock Stream, NY you’ll find Shtayburne Farm. A fourth-generation dairy farm offering small-batch cheeses made with locally-grown crops and milk. These scenic drives will take you past some of our region’s charming towns, antique shops, museums, our lakes, wine trails, breweries, cideries, distilleries and more.
Along the way pay attention to farm stops in the countryside, many of which offer U-Pick experiences, and roadside farm stands to pick up some of the best local ingredients to take home with you.
Seneca Lake Scenic Byway
One of the most well-known scenic drives in Finger Lakes Wine Country is the Seneca Lake Scenic Byway running along the east side of Seneca Lake. This is the perfect drive to get a taste of the Finger Lakes as you’ll be passing wineries, cideries, distilleries, breweries, restaurants, and farms. This makes for great stops along the way as well as many great places to catch one of our beautiful Finger Lakes sunsets overlooking Seneca Lake.
We recommend seeing our small town guide to Watkins Glen for ideas of what to see and explore here before starting off on your scenic adventure up the east side of Seneca Lake up to Lodi Marine State Park where you can picnic, watch a gorgeous sunset, and swim and enjoy the pebble beach in the warmer months. (Just note that you will have to pay an $8 per car parking fee at Lodi Marine State Park.)
You’ll be driving along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail which is dotted with wineries that offer more incredible views and passing by one of the best roadside attractions in New York State, Hector Falls, which cascades right along a bridge you’ll be driving on Route 414.
The wineries close at around 5:00 pm, so for a great sunset view we recommend stopping at Two Goats Brewing or Grist Iron Brewing for views and a drink.
Penn Yan to Dresden
A hidden gem and one of the most scenic drives in the Finger Lakes is the road that follows the Keuka Outlet Trail. This trail follows an outlet that connects Keuka Lake into Seneca Lake.
The Keuka Outlet Trail is a 7-mile path that is easily walkable and bike-friendly. You can drive along the Outlet Road for several different access points. But the drive itself is also pretty, especially during the fall foliage and spring months.
Starting in Penn Yan on East Elm Street which turns into Outlet Road, you will be leaving town and pass through a wooded road that has a few different stops where you can get out and enjoy a section of the Keuka Outlet Trail.
If you’re looking to stretch your legs, be sure to park and walk towards Seneca Mills Falls or Cascade Falls. There is a parking area that gives you access to the trail with signs that point you in the direction for both waterfalls. Seneca Mills is the quickest to access with a 5-7 minute walk.
Continuing the scenic drive towards Dresden you will pass beautiful farmscapes on Hopeton Road.

Owego to Corning
Driving between the charming towns of Owego to Corning offers some picturesque countryside views. Be sure to read our small town guides to both Owego and Corning for ideas of what to do in each of these beautiful destinations. Not only are these great places to stop and stay a bit longer, there are also great opportunities to check out the shops, restaurants, cafes, and cultural attractions.
Leaving Owego on Route 96 you will pass through the rural rolling hills driving along the Catatonk Creek passing some of the region’s most beautiful farmland.
Continuing on Route 96 through Spencer you will continue to pass more scenic farms on Route 223 before getting on the Interstate 86-West with breathtaking views of the Chemung River before arriving in Corning.
Elmira to Jerusalem Hill
One of the shorter scenic drives to enjoy starts in the city of Elmira and wanders up Jerusalem Hill Road where you will be rewarded with views of Elmira’s historic landscape along the Chemung River, continuing into more countryside farmscapes and wooded scenery headed towards Maple Hill State Forest.
For a breathtaking sunset experience with dinner, be sure to make a reservation at the Hill Top Inn which opens for dinner and has a large outdoor seating area and patio overlooking the valley and the town of Elmira and the Chemung River below.
The restaurant at Hill Top Inn doesn’t open until 5:00 pm, so this is only an evening experience. We recommend calling ahead and making a reservation to enjoy the breathtaking views from their prime location.

Along Keuka Lake
Drive around the Crooked Lake for some of the most majestic scenery Finger Lakes Wine Country has to offer. We recommend seeing our small town guides to the villages of Hammondsport and Penn Yan for ideas of what to see and explore here before starting off on your scenic adventure.
Exploring the West side of Keuka Lake you have three different route options to choose from, The Lower Road (West Lake Road/ Route 54A) along the shores of the lake, Middle Road which connects to Route 76 and offers views of the lake and vineyards from a higher point, and The Upper Road (Greyton H. Taylor Memorial Drive).
Along the drive you can stop at many of the region’s spectacular wineries including Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery, Heron Hill Winery, and Ravines Wine Cellars. For beer fans there are stops like Keuka Brewing and Steuben Brewing Company.
Exploring the East Side of Keuka Lake you are rewarded with incredible panoramic views from more of the wineries along the Keuka Lake Wine Trail including Keuka Spring Vineyards, McGregor Vineyards, and Hunt Country Vineyards.
For a bite to eat, try stopping at Seneca Farms (open seasonally from the first Friday in March through the end of October) in Penn Yan to take to Keuka Lake State Park where you can picnic with waterfront views.

Penn Yan
The quaint and beautiful Village of Penn Yan, NY was named after its early Pennsylvania and Yankee settlers. This is where you can find independently- and locally- owned cafés, shops, restaurants, and taverns along Main Street’s historic early 19th century buildings.
The Laurentide Inn is the result of transforming a 200-year-old private residence and carriage house barn into five guest suites. In the back of the house, you’ll find their brewery and the pub.
Two other Penn Yan breweries to visit are Abandon Brewing Co. and Climbing Bines Hop Farm & Craft Ale Company. Abandon Brewing Co. is a geothermal-powered craft brewery located in a reused farmhouse overlooking Keuka Lake. You can enjoy tastings in the taproom, a pint in the beer hall, or out on the deck overlooking the grapes, apples, and hops of Abandon Acres. Climbing Bines Craft Ale Company is one of New York State’s first farm breweries. They specialize in small-batch, hand-crafted ales brewed on-site with the freshest estate-grown hops and locally-harvested barley.
If you’d rather sip cider head to WortHog Cidery in Penn Yan. Where they use a special blend of New York Apples to make their ciders and lightly carbonate them for a finishing touch and unique taste.
A few miles away in Keuka Park, NY you’ll find LyonSmith Brewing Co. This brewery has a mission “to make beer that is worth drinking, a company that is worth working for, and a community that is worth living in.”

There is a new brewery that just opened (in the building that used to be Starkey’s Lookout) called Tin Barn Brewing. It’s a brewery based in the Hudson Valley that just opened their first Finger Lakes Wine Country location.
Hammondsport
The picturesque village of Hammondsport, NY is home to Pleasant Valley Wine Company the oldest winery in Finger Lakes Wine Country. They survived the prohibition years by selling sacramental and medicinal wine while sitting on an inventory of 70,000 cases that couldn’t be sold.
At The Brewery of Broken Dreams, their ales are traditionally inspired and uniquely rendered from a combination of resources provided by the naturally abundant farmland, and the desire, knowledge, and skill of local farmers and our brewers.
Finger Lakes Beer Company is a New York State Farm Brewery offering tasting flights, half-pints, pints, and pitchers of a dozen styles of ales all brewed on-site. Be sure to try their Vanilla Porter which won the 2015 Best Craft Beer in New York State at the TAP New York.
The family-run Keuka Brewing Company was the first microbrewery on Keuka Lake. They pride themselves on producing unique small artisan batches of great beer by experimenting in different styles and tastes.
Steuben Brewing Company is a farm brewery that produces New York State-labeled beer. They strive to make great beer that supports local farmers by utilizing ingredients that are grown and produced in New York State.
Krooked Tusker Distillery is a small batch, farm distillery on Keuka Lake that produces handcrafted libations made from locally-sourced materials.
Watkins Glen
From the 19 waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park to “The Glen”, Grand Prix Festival, and International Motor Racing Research Center there are so many reasons to visit Watkins Glen, NY. Beer is also a big deal in this area. Offering two unique lodging options and more breweries, cideries, and distilleries than any other area.
Watkins Brewery Vacation Rentals is located in a historic building that once housed several businesses including a couple of different breweries. The refurbished building now houses seven vacation rental homes. Pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, and bikes are also available for rent on-site for fun Seneca Lake water activities!
Head six minutes north to travel back in time and across the pond to a traditional British Pub. Seneca Lake Brewing Company & The Beerocracy in Rock Stream, NY is the states only dedicated Cask Ale brewery. Adding to the authenticity of the turn of the century British Pub, the Beerocracy Pub offers a cell phone-free bar environment enabling people to truly enjoy the atmosphere and environment. Secure Cubbie’s are available behind the bar to store mobile devices whilst in the bar area and there is a $10 fine if you are caught with your mobile device. All fines are donated to a local charity quarterly.
You can find both Rock Stream Brewery and Rock Stream Distilling on Rock Stream Vineyards which is Seneca Lake’s only licensed Grappa and Grape Brandy distillery. Owner and operator Dr. Mark Karasz Spent three years in Italy learning wine and Grappa production. After returning from Italy, he founded Rock Stream Vineyards and began growing his own grapes, making and bottling wine, brandy, Grappa, and ports.
Head 15-minutes north to Miles Craft Ales at Miles Wine Cellars in Himrod, NY where they are pouring: Calisto Pale Ale, Scottish Lure Ale, Bonfire Brew Ale, and Io Milk Stout.
If you like a historic stay with a theme look no further than the Seneca Lodge Craft Brewing in Watkins Glen. The main lodge was built for the first Grand Prix in The Glen, in 1948. This racing theme can be seen throughout the venue. Suspended from the ceiling in the Tavern Room are Tires from NASCAR champions. Behind the bar, laurel wreaths from the Formula 1 races of the 1970s.
Not only are there cabins, a-frames, and motel rooms on the property there is also a restaurant.
Nearby you’ll find Rooster Fish Brewing Pub, one of New York’s first official farm breweries offering passionately brewed, uniquely world-class craft ale from locally-sourced ingredients. There are at least five craft-style small batch beers and up to four seasonal and special brews. Sample, order a pint, and even take some home with you.
Launched in 1997 on-site at Wagner Vineyards in Lodi, NY, Wagner Valley Brewing Company provides beer-lovers with a variety of award-winning craft-brewed beers. Wagner Valley Brewing Company currently has 9 draft lines with styles rotating often and ranging from light to dark, bitter to sweet. They also produce an all-natural, non-alcoholic, real Draft Root Beer.
Nearby in Hector, NY is Scale House Brewery where you’ll find quality craft beer and delicious gourmet pizza. Along with Lucky Hare Brewing Company which creates handcrafted beer that reflects their passion for great beer and the Finger Lakes and its community.

Corning
Corning, New York is a small town with a big reputation. Known for its glass, it is home to 169-year-old Corning Incorporated which has been creating glass cookware since CorningWare (1958), and Pyrex (1915) and is now a center of innovation developing everything from the glass on your cell phone to the glass used in vaccine vials. The town is now known for the Corning Museum of Glass which has been featured on Netflix’s Blown Away, a competition series featuring the art of glassmaking.
Located on historic Market Street is Corning’s first brewpub, Market Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant. With six fresh beers brewed right on-premise, a bier-garten, rooftop seating, and a delectable “upscale” menu, Market Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant serves only the finest food and drink.
Carey’s Brew House is a two-story Brewery Restaurant with a wide range of local and international beers on tap, including in-house brewing of our own recipes, occasional guest brewers, and featured local breweries.
Iron Flamingo Brewery is Corning’s first brewery to bottle beer for distribution. They support local businesses by allowing food to be ordered in and hosting local food vendors regularly. Liquid Shoes Brewing is a small batch brewery located in the heart of Corning’s Gaffer District.
Paying homage to the industry that defined Hornell, New York is RailHead Brewing Company. Located where hundreds of rail cars once stood eager for far-off places visit this brewery to be transported to another time.

Also known as Mark Twain Country, the American author spent his summers in Elmira, New York for more than 20 years. You can even visit the Mark Twain Study and Exhibit on the beautiful campus of Elmira College. Where he penned some of his most famous pieces of literature including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and more.
Upstate Brewing Company in Elmira, NY is a production micro-brewery that produces fresh, local, and unique beers. Which are currently on tap and in cans at restaurants, bars, and stores in the majority of the counties in New York state.

Head south to Diversion Brewing Co. a small 3-barrel craft brewery in Chemung, NY with a wide variety of beers available to please any palate.

Seneca Mills Falls and Cascade Mills Falls
The 7-mile Keuka Outlet Trail connects Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake. Most popular for hiking, biking, and horseback riding the trail follows the old train and canal route from Penn Yan to Dresden. It also has two trails that lead to two different waterfalls!
One leads to Seneca Mills Falls, a 40-foot waterfall located in the ruins of a former mill. It’s an impressive combination of a man-made dam and a natural waterfall. The quickest way to get to Seneca Mills Falls is to find the small parking area on Outlet Road which is about three miles from Penn Yan. From here you can enjoy the quick walk along the trail for about .3 miles before arriving at Seneca Mills Falls.
The second waterfall on the Keuka Outlet Trail is Cascade Mills Falls. Seneca Mills Falls and Cascade Mills Falls are about 1.3 miles apart on the Keuka Outlet Trail. Cascade Mills Falls is about a mile walk along a relatively flat trail from the first parking area on Outlet Road. Which will give you a total hike of 2.6 miles round trip. Along the way to Cascade Mills Falls, the trail opens to reveal several old buildings. As you approach the 20-foot Cascade Mills Falls you’ll see the ruins of the Seneca Paper Mill.
Best Time to Visit: For the waterfalls, spring and fall give you the best flow. The Keuka Lake Outlet Trail is wonderful year-round.

Aunt Sarah Falls
Another roadside waterfall that’s worth the stop is Aunt Sarah’s Falls. Located on State Route 414, just north of the village of Montour Falls, this seasonal waterfall only flows well when water levels are high. While Aunt Sarah’s Falls is well over several hundred feet tall only 90-feet are visible from the road.
There is parking directly across from Aunt Sarah’s Falls making it a very quick and convenient stop.
Best Time to Visit: Spring and after heavy rain.

Hector Falls
Catch a glimpse of Hector Falls while driving by or enjoy it from a boat on Seneca lake. One of the most well-known waterfalls in the region is stunning every season of the year. This gorgeous roadside waterfall is said to be 165 feet in height, but only about 50 feet can be seen from the road.
The rest falls in two more drops as the water makes its way into Seneca lake below. In warmer months, we recommend taking a sunset schooner ride or renting a boat to see the lower waterfalls from the lake.
Please do not exit your car to view this waterfall.
Best Time to View: This waterfall flows all year long but is best just after rainfall.

She-Qua-Ga Falls
Only half a mile away is She-Qua-Ga Falls, a 156-foot waterfall that’s easily visible from the road. Located behind someone’s backyard, it’s one of the most accessible waterfalls in the region. You can drive by and see the falls, or park and walk to the falls in under 5 minutes.
This neighborhood waterfall has a unique story. Not only was it featured in the opening sequence of “A Bone To Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery“. You can also find a sketch of it on display in The Louvre in Paris completed by King Louis Philippe d’ Orleans of France, who eventually became king.
Best Time to Visit: Year-round. Consistent. Rarely completely dry.

Deckertown Falls
Deckertown Falls is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in the area, but definitely a gem! Located on the outskirts of the village of Montour Falls, Deckertown Falls is a moderately challenging hike not commonly known to tourists. Please keep in mind the surrounding land is posted private property so stay on the public path.
There’s a dirt/grass parking area for about 3 cars on East Catharine Street.
Best Time to Visit: Spring through fall.

Havana Glen Park/Eagle Cliff Falls
Most road trippers traveling through the historic village of Montour Falls (a sweet little spot between Corning, NY and Watkins Glen, NY) will make a pit-stop at She-Qua-Ga Falls and the nearby Watkins Glen State Park. But we recommend adding another local gem to your waterfall list: Eagle Cliff Falls in Havana Glen Park.
This 40-foot waterfall is a favorite of both locals looking to cool their feet on a hot summer day (no swimming allowed) and campers who can set up their tents and RVs just a few feet away in the park’s wooded campground (also perfect spot for gatherings and afternoon grilling while enjoying the majestic sounds of the falls and adjacent creek).
There’s a suggested admission of $2 and parking, as well as a playground (so please drive with care) and shaded picnic areas throughout the park. Those with accessibility issues have access to the base of the falls – a nice photo area. Others lookin to enjoy the main drop need to climb a few stone steps, a few more wooden steps, and 28 metal grate stairs – with railing – to main falls.
While a short and easy hike to the main falls – the trail has areas that are flatter than others – with some spots consisting of carved shale steps that narrow significantly at certain points. For this reason, we recommend wearing shoes that are both waterproof, as muddy pools can form during rainier seasons, as well as with a good grip to avoid slipping. Waverly Glen Falls
Waverly Glen Falls is a 40-foot waterfall that’s easily accessible but can be difficult to find. Located in the small village of Waverly in Tioga County, Waverly Glen Falls can’t be seen from the park, so most visitors have no clue that this impressive waterfall is just a few steps away.
Enter Waverly Glen Park from West Pine Street and Moore Street entrance to reach Waverly Glen Falls. Drive until you come to a chain-link fence. If the fence is open, you’re allowed to enter.
Best Time to Visit: Springtime and during periods of high water. During the dry months, this waterfall can dry up to a trickle.

Watkins Glen State Park
Home to nearly 20 waterfalls and 10 hiking trails, Watkins Glen State Park is the place to see the most waterfalls in Finger Lakes Wine Country. On the southern point of Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen State Park is home to a publicly accessible 832-stone step trail overlooking a gorge carved out by the waterfalls in the park. The most notable waterfalls on the trail are Rainbow Falls and Cavern Cascade. You’ll have to walk behind part of each of these falls and you will definitely get sprayed. Be careful on the trail, especially in these locations which can be slippery and wet.
Enter Watkins Glen State Park through the Main, North, or South entrances. We suggest you use the Main Entrance If you plan on hiking to the waterfalls. For the best views of the waterfalls take the Gorge Trail up and take the Indian Trail or South Rim Trail back. Watkins Glen State Park is a must-see for waterfall lovers and anyone seeking a gorgeous Finger Lakes Wine Country experience.
Best Time to Visit: The Gorge Trail is closed in winter and reopens in stages in the spring. Which happens to be one of the best times to visit. The second best time to visit is in the fall as the leaves are changing. Call before your visit and see these waterfalls with the fall foliage or spring showers.

Finger Lakes Wine Country offers some of the most beautiful landscapes in New York State. The region is also a haven for waterfall chasing. One might assume that waterfall viewing is best done in the warmer months, but waterfalls truly come to life and are spectacular to see during the winter months. Enjoy sparkling snowy scenes when you visit these five magical waterfalls this winter.

Watkins Glen State Park
The famous waterfalls of Watkins Glen State Park attract visitors from near and far every year and every season. While the famous Gorge Trail that takes you through 19 cascading waterfalls directly through the gorge is closed in the winter for safety reasons due to icy conditions, the South Rim Trail is open year-round and offers a glimpse of a true winter wonderland from above overlooking the gorge and its waterfalls.
The South Rim Trail passes the scenic stone arched, Sentry Bridge, which gives visitors a peek at the canyon views and Keyhole Falls.
What’s great about visiting this popular natural attraction in the winter is not only the stunning winter scenery, but this is also a less popular time to visit and take in the surrounding beauty with less people.
As with any hike in the winter, use caution as there could be ice.
Seneca Mills Falls
Located just outside of Penn Yan along the 7 mile Keuka Outlet Trail that connects Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake you can find another gorgeous waterfall any season, but especially a sight to see with a layer of snow at Seneca Mills Falls located in the ruins of a former mill.
This 40ft waterfall can be accessed by foot along the Keuka Outlet Trail or by enjoying other winter activities like snowshoeing, horseback riding, and snowmobiling.
If you’re looking for the quickest way to visit Seneca Mills Falls, you will want to find the small parking area on Outlet Road around three miles outside of the town of Penn Yan. From here you can enjoy the easy walk along the trail for about .3 miles before approaching the scenic waterfall.
Aunt Sarah Falls
Another roadside waterfall in wine country that is especially beautiful in winter is Aunt Sarah Falls, located on State Route 414 just north of the village of Montour Falls.
This is one of the waterfalls in the region that is very dependent on waterflow. During a dry summer you won’t be able to see Aunt Sarah Falls, but luckily in the colder days of winter the flow freezes and makes for a really beautiful frozen waterfall and giant icicle scene.
There is a parking area right next to the falls making it a very easy and quick stop, even on the coldest of days!
She-Qua-Ga Falls
Towering above the village of Montour Falls at 156 feet, She-Qua-Ga Falls is another scenic gem of the region and absolutely gorgeous in the winter. Situated between residential homes and the village of Montour Falls you can witness this stunning waterfall from the viewing platform, driving through the village, and from Main Street.
The name of She-Qua-Ga Falls means ‘tumbling waters’ in the Seneca language as this site was formerly a Seneca Tribe village.
A surprising fact about She-Qua-Ga Falls and Montour Falls is that you can find a sketch of it on display in The Louvre in Paris completed by King Louis Philippe d’ Orleans of France.
During a really dry season, it’s hard to see this waterfall, but in the winter you not only get water flow but all the frozen beauty around it.
Honerable Mention
Hector Falls
Catch a glimpse of one of the most well-known waterfalls in the region while driving along State Route 414. The cascading Hector Falls is truly stunning every season of the year – and it can be viewed right from your car!
In the winter, you are rewarded with a view of the cascading water dusted with snow and ice. From this spot, you’re witnessing the upper falls, what you won’t be able to see from this vantage point are the series of waterfalls below the bridge you’re driving on flowing into Seneca Lake.
Please do not exit your car to view this waterfall.
Finger Lakes Wine Country is an all-season getaway, we even like to say that there are five seasons of fun here. Winter is easily one of the most underrated seasons to visit the region and one of the quietest, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Here are just a few of the incredible outdoor activities to enjoy in Finger Lakes Wine Country in the winter.
Snowshoe Rentals
A fun adventurous activity fit for the whole family in winter is snowshoeing on the trails at Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum in Elmira. The trails are open to the public from dawn to dusk, however if you don’t have your own snowshoes or crampons you can rent snowshoes for both children and adults from Tanglewood Nature Center during their hours of operation.
Visitors typically spend anywhere from one to three hours exploring the trails and there are trail options for beginners to advanced snowshoe enthusiasts. Please call ahead of your visit as their seasonal hours are different and the facilities are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Snowmobile & Cross Country Ski Trails
Two favorite wintertime sports to enjoy after a fresh dumping of snow is snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The Keuka Outlet Trail offers seven miles bordering the Keuka Outlet stretching between Keuka and Seneca Lakes from Penn Yan to Dresden, NY.
Along the trail, for both winter activities you will be rewarded with the serene nature surroundings as well as gorgeous views of Seneca Mills Falls.

Maple Syrup
Another end of winter time favorite to enjoy in the region is tasting a bit of nature’s candy during maple syrup season! Many of our region’s farms and orchards produce pure maple syrup and you can not only sample this season’s tasty syrup, but also bring it back home to your kitchen.
Be sure to call ahead any of the farms or markets in advance to ensure they are open during your visit, many have special seasonal hours.

Winter Wines
Winter in Wine Country is one of the most exciting times to enjoy some of our award winning wines from our region. While enjoying a tasting at one of our wineries requires a little planning ahead as some tasting rooms are only open seasonally and those that do have wine tasting available often have a different schedule for the slower, winter months.
We advise to call ahead to any wineries you plan on visiting before your visit to ensure they are open during that time/day.
You can still enjoy some of our wines without visiting our cellars and wineries by picking up bottles at the winery retail shops or any of our local wine retailers who are open year round.
During the winter months, you may want to enjoy some of our specialty wines from the colder months including ice wines which are a type of dessert wine which are known for being sweeter produced from grapes that have been frozen still on the vine.
Another wintertime favorite for drinking are fortified wines like Sherry or Ports known for their higher alcohol content. Winemakers add a neutral grape spirit, like brandy, to the wine which is where you get the elevated alcohol content from and is often consumed in the colder months.
There’s also something so nice about a good red wine on a cold winter day or night which our region has a great selection of red wines.
Winter Horseback Riding
Just outside one of Watkins Glen you can enjoy winter horseback riding at Painted Bar Stables who offers horseback riding experiences year round by appointment only.

Winter Camping
Not for the faint of heart, but another adventurous winter activity in the region for those who love the chilly wilderness is primitive backcountry camping in Italy Hill State Forest in Branchport off of Keuka Lake.
This style of camping offers no amenities and are for the serious outdoor enthusiasts who like to camp with everything on your back and the winter backdrop and crisp cool air make for an unforgettable experience. Anyone participating in primitive camping in the area must follow these guidelines from New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation.

The Rye Bar and Restaurant in Elmira, New York is the perfect place for your crew to come together and have a great time. Happy Hour is every night from 4-6 PM. Saturday night is Steak Night where you’ll enjoy a 3-course steak dinner!
On Liberty Street in Penn Yan, New is Outlet 111, New York’s hidden gem. Currently serving an upscale pub fare-style menu, this restaurant takes pride in curating a wine list that showcases the Finger Lakes region and highlights the talent of women producers.
Get your BBQ fix at Nickel’s Pit BBQ in downtown Watkins Glen or Corning’s Gaffer District. Where you’ll enjoy locally sourced ingredients, finger-lickin’ sauce, and live music.
You can’t miss the famous Beer Battered Fried Chicken prepared daily at Seneca Farms in Penn Yan. Then walk over to the retro ice cream shop next door which has over 50 flavors of homemade ice cream. Seneca Farms is open seasonally from the first Friday in March through the end of October.
If you’re in the mood for “high-end low brow food” enjoy the locally sourced hot dogs, sausages, and hamburgers at FLX Wienery in Dundee, New York. Here you can enjoy homemade milkshakes and get it spiked if you like!

Finger Lakes Wine Country has more to offer than just exploring our incredible Wine Trails. Craft brewing has exploded so much in the region in the last decade that there are a variety of breweries offering an array of experiences. The region has many breweries, cideries, and distilleries worth bragging about. There are even plenty of options for Non-Drinkers.
Breweries
Wagner Valley Brewing Company in Lodi, NY provides beer-lovers with a variety of award-winning craft-brewed beers. Wagner Valley Brewing Company has styles rotating often and ranging from light to dark, bitter to sweet. They also produce an all-natural, non-alcoholic, real Draft Root Beer.
Steuben Brewing Company in Hammondsport is a farm brewery. Their outdoor picnic tables and patio seating offer gorgeous farm views on the west side of Keuka Lake.
Iron Flamingo Brewery is Corning’s first brewery to bottle beer for distribution. They support local businesses by allowing food to be ordered in and hosting local food vendors regularly. Iron Flamingo Brewery uses local farmers for their hops and malt, helping to sustain the rich agriculture of the region. They are proud to utilize solar power for the brewing process.
Distilleries
Finger Lakes Distilling is the premier New York craft distillery, creating high-quality whiskey, gin, brandy, grappa, and liqueurs. They hand-craft their products using local grains, farm-fresh fruits, and time-honored techniques to produce artisan spirits.
If you’re looking for a classic whiskey look no further than Dundee’s O’Begley Distillery. Which produces Traditional Irish Style Whiskey, using a small-batch pot still process.

Racing
Watkins Glen International is known as the Birthplace of American Road Racing. Also known as “The Glen,” is a road course racetrack that hosts NASCAR and IMSA, among other auto racing events throughout the year. Watkins Glen International is home to over 60 years of motor sports history and the annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival.
Every April you can experience Watkins Glen International like you have never before with Drive The Glen! Find out what it feels like to drive three escorted laps around this storied road course in your personal vehicle. Don’t miss the Grand Prix Festival in September
Golfing
If your guys are interested in a round of golf you’ll get the finest views of the Susquehanna River Valley at the Tioga Golf Club. You’ll need to use nearly every club in your bag on this Par 71 course.
Hiking
A visit to Finger Lakes Wine Country isn’t complete without exploring the great outdoors. The region boasts miles of trails for hikers and plenty of waterfalls to fill your vacation with adventure. Hike the Gorge Trail for views of the enchanting 19 cascading waterfalls in Watkins Glen State Park. For more scenic, wooded hiking trails head to Italy Hill State Forest in Branchport. Or trek along an abandoned railroad path from Montour Falls to Horseheads on the Catharine Valley Trail.
For an alternative view, enjoy the trails and vineyards on horseback with Painted Bar Stables in Watkins Glen. Which offers small group, guided horseback rides, and lessons.
Kayaking
There is no shortage of lake activities to enjoy here. During the warmer months, the best way to cool off is to enjoy a day at the lake. Take in the water fun by renting kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddle boards, and boats.
Summit to Stream Adventures in Watkins Glen, offers guided kayak tours and chartered fishing trips. Keuka Watersports offers day rentals for pontoon boats or jet skis if you’re looking to spend a day floating with a gentle lake breeze on the sparkling waters of Keuka Lake.
Fishing
Fishing is great all year but winter is one of the best seasons for fishing in the Finger Lakes. When the lakes freeze over, the region becomes a hotspot for various types of trout, smallmouth bass, bluegills, and numerous pickerel. The northern tip of Keuka Lake is a popular area for ice-fishing enthusiasts. Here you can find rentals along the lake so you can easily enjoy ice fishing every day of your winter getaway.
Seasonal Additions
Southern Tier Balloon Tours offers a year-round Owego experience that allows you to get a unique view of the region. However, this aerial adventure is best during the spring, summer, and fall. Named the #1 pick on Conde Nast Traveler’s list of Best Fall Foliage Adventures in the U.S., Harris Hill Soaring Corporation is open on the weekends starting in April, and then transition to 7 days a week from June 10 – Labor Day. After Labor Day, they are back to the weekend schedule until the end of October. Soar 4,000 feet above sea level on an ASK-21 High-Performance Glider and experience Finger Lakes Wine Country from above. The passenger weight limit is 245 pounds.
If you’re looking for some fun in the sun on a Sunday, visit The Waterfront near Hammondsport, New York. They offer dockside service for boats at Clammin’ and Jammin’, with freshly steamed clams and live music.
The Finger Lakes region represents a beautiful place that many visitors enjoy year-round. As our communities grow, welcoming people from around the country and the world who have decided to call Finger Lakes Wine Country home has helped us to become even more representative of who we are as a region. This is especially noticeable in how we continue to expand the spaces and places that embrace the LGBTQ+ community. At only a 5-hour average drive from many major cities (NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, DC, and Toronto) and several Pride celebrations worthy of the trip in June, we are excited to share this Queer in the Finger Lakes Travel Guide. This guide features tips and highlights from several LGBTQ+ locals who live and love it here.
OWEGO, NY
When driving from cities like New York or Philadelphia, take the time to stop in Owego (only 40 minutes from Corning, N Y). A stay at Belva Lockwood Inn is the epitome of B&B luxury. Beautiful rooms and a delicious breakfast, all in the former home of a radical feminist who dared to push the envelope and even became the first woman to be admitted to the Bar. Belva later became the first woman to argue a case in front of the Supreme Court and went on to run for President of the United States in 1884 & 1888.
Book lovers will enjoy the experience that is Riverow Books and all the cozy little nooks one can get lost reading a book in. Don’t leave town without a stop at Carol’s Coffee and Art Bar for an eclectic collection of local art and good coffee.
TIP: See Owego from its historic Riverwalk. The trail stretches about a quarter mile from Draper Park to Ahwaga Park beneath the bridge and along the backside of the historic buildings known as Riverow.
CORNING, NY
Corning, NY, has a pedestrian-friendly Market St. full of locations to dine, shop, and connect with the community, and it is a fun place to spend time when not in the lake or at the wineries. Hannah Jones, one of the founders of Southern Finger Lakes Pride, which hosts the local Pride celebrations in town, recommends, “Walk into Liquid Shoes Brewing for a cold beer or The Cellar for a lovely meal. If you want to go off Market Street and enjoy the arts, the Corning Museum of Glass and The Rockwell Museum sponsor and collaborate with SoFLx Pride regularly. In addition, they both strive for diverse art, with Rockwell being a regional leader in this effort.”
Mark Schmidt, a choreographer and dancer born in the area but only recently moved back from NYC after 20 years away, is rediscovering a new Finger Lakes region. “The increased visibility of the LGBTQ+ community is a huge change,” he’s noticed. His favorite jaunts? “I’m more into the local towny bars and restaurants. Market St is cute, but I like the blue-collar, working-class vibe. He recommends, “Brick Corning is very blue collar and queer-friendly. I like it because they open at 3 pm for drinks and food. They also frequently host live music.” Another favorite for beer-lover Mark is Seneca Lodge for its rustic vibe with a great mix of locals and tourists. “They make their own beer and have a great selection of IPAs.” Mark also recommends queer-owned Frans Landing in nearby Painted Post for its small-town feel and welcoming vibes.
If you have a sweet tooth or are just looking for a sweet lunch spot, then head over to Laurabelle’s A Scratch Bakery. This queer-owned bakery has everything from freshly baked cookies, cookies, and cakes to order, as well as sandwiches and other lunch bites. Our favorite treat there? Afternoon tea!

ELMIRA, NY
A short 15-minute drive from Corning is Elmira. Stop in for coffee at the queer-owned The Garage at Rye, a coffee shop offering some of your favorite java and tea beverages, breakfast, lunch, and freshly baked goods. Charlie Hunter owns the coffee shop and the next-door Rye Bar and Restaurant, where you can enjoy a great selection of cocktails, mocktails, jazz night Thursday, and the occasional Drag Bingo. You can stay overnight at one of their Airbnbs located above the restaurant.
Other fun spots to visit, that are also queer-owned, are the Chamberlain Acres Garden Center and Florist, which regularly hosts a farmer’s market and local food trucks, and Bell’s Coffee & Dry Bar. WATKINS GLEN, NY & MONTOUR FALLS
“As a local, I spend much of my time in Watkins Glen and Hector, around Seneca Lake, “Hannah said. “Friends of mine like Terri (she/her) and Orlando (he/him) run queer inclusive spaces.” Terri owns a vintage shop, Sales by Terri on Main Street in Montour Falls, NY, and is known for gathering community and opening spaces for others. A great gathering spot for great food, cider, and community Graft Wine + Cider Bar on Franklin St. in Watkins Glen. “Orlando Rodriguez will cook you the best Dominican meal you’ll get in the Finger Lakes,” Hannah said, adding, “Fun fact, most of the staff is queer too!” North New York, a coffee shop in the heart of Montour Falls, has become a favorite gathering place for the growing artsy and queer community there and features items from local farmers and artisans, as well as freshly baked goods and delicious brew.
Nature lovers will be safe and enjoy camping at Clute Memorial Park or the Finger Lakes National Forest (with first-come, first-serve tent set-up spots). The welcoming crew at Elf in the Oak will help pack a lunch, or the nearby Lucky Hare Brewing is a great place to relax with a drink and the occasional live music.
TIP: Lake life is a way of life here in the Finger Lakes, so be sure to stop by Seneca Lake Kayak for a daily kayak rental to explore Seneca Lake the right way!
PENN YAN, NY
Bonnie Stinson, a freelance writer and creative, moved to the area with their partner a little over a year ago, and while they are still exploring and getting to know the region, there is at least one spot they have already marked as a favorite. “I loved the vibe in Amity Coffee,” Bonnie said. “From the sticker-laden laptops to the flat-brim panel hats, it’s obvious that this is a place where young queer folks feel comfortable spending time.” They added, “Friendliness exudes from everyone here, from the guest vendors to the baristas. Plus, it’s as close to city brunch food as you can get in a local coffee shop in this area, and that’s a queer win for me.”
Locals also enjoy shopping at the antique and gift shops along Penn Yan’s Main St., such as The Staving Artists, for gifts featuring local artisans and in-house handcrafted wooden items, or The Potter’s Gallery, which also features local pottery makers. Enjoy dinner and a mocktail or cocktail at 18th Amendment or Outlet 111, right on the water at Keuka Outlet Trail.
TIP: Rent a bike (electric ones are available too!) from Shore Rentals and bike 7 miles of the Keuka Outlet Trail, and see waterfalls, old mills, and forestry landscape. Make it to the end, and you’ll see where the outlet connects to Seneca Lake!
THE WINE TRAILS
There are so many beautiful wine trail experiences along the way. We encourage you to check out our wine trail itineraries for Seneca, Keuka, and Cayuga. However, Ryan Anderson, chef and culinary teacher, calls out favorites such as Ryan Williams Vineyard along Seneca Lakes “for their great atmosphere, views, food, and wine. It’s a great brunch spot for groups of friends or a relaxing lake-view lunch.” He also includes Weis Vineyards, along Keuka Lake,“ for their friendly and relaxing atmosphere, great wine, and lots of spaces to gather and enjoy wine and company.”
Other mentions are Knapp Winery along Cayuga Lake; we especially love pairing their wines at their Field and Vine Restaurant and Dr. Konstantin Frank’s 1889 Wine Tasting Experience. Another experience to add to your wine trail days is a stop wherever cidermakers and food truck owners Charlie Treichler and Josh Jenkins may be serving their Yummy Burgers and Sylvan Cider (often near Hammondsport and Keuka Lake)!
TIP: Even if you don’t drink alcohol, you will find lots to do along the wine trails, including several sober-friendly experiences!
DON’T FORGET THE ART SCENE
Finger Lakes Wine Country thrives because of the queer local artists that reside and share their work throughout our small towns. Artists who call Corning, Elmira, Watkins Glen, Hector, and all of the Finger Lakes home, consistently invite queer culture into every space. SoFLX Pride festivals in Corning and Elmira Pride, both in June, feature a series of local artisans and live performers to enjoy. Also, in Corning, art lovers can view exhibitions at the ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes or go to one of the local Drag Brunches held around the region. Pride coincides with the annual Elmira Street Painting Festival, a fun event showcasing local artists as well as the creations of community members throughout the day.
