Our weather is less snowy than in Buffalo, Rochester, or northern Pennsylvania. This is due to several key geographic and climatic factors, including the region’s distance from the Great Lakes, its terrain, and the local weather patterns that influence snowfall.
1. Distance from the Great Lakes
Buffalo and Rochester, located along the eastern shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, are directly impacted by a weather phenomenon called lake-effect snow. This occurs when cold air moves over the relatively warmer waters of the lakes, causing moisture to evaporate, and when this moist air cools, it releases the moisture in the form of snow. This process produces heavy, localized snowfalls, particularly on the east sides of the lakes. Buffalo and Rochester are both in the direct path of these snow bands, which is why they often experience substantial snowfall in the winter.
In contrast, Finger Lakes Wine Country is located further inland, about 50 to 100 miles from the Great Lakes. While the region is still influenced by the lakes, it is far enough away that it does not experience the same intensity of lake-effect snow. The Finger Lakes still have a moderating effect on the climate, helping to keep temperatures milder, but they do not produce the heavy, persistent snowfalls that occur in cities like Buffalo and Rochester.
2. Topography of the Finger Lakes Region
The terrain of Finger Lakes Wine Country plays a role in reducing snowfall. The region is characterized by rolling hills, valleys, and deep lakes that create a more sheltered environment compared to the open flat areas near the Great Lakes. These hills can block or weaken the lake-effect snow bands before they reach the Finger Lakes, preventing the area from experiencing the heavy snowfalls seen in nearby cities.
Additionally, the mountain ranges and higher elevations of northern Pennsylvania also contribute to more snow. In these regions, the wind patterns are more conducive to lifting moist air, which results in heavier snow. The Finger Lakes, on the other hand, are not as prone to these elevated snow-producing processes.
3. Wind Patterns and Lake Effect
The winds that bring lake-effect snow are generally westerly or northwesterly, blowing across the Great Lakes and onto the land. While Buffalo and Rochester are directly in the path of these winds, the Finger Lakes region is positioned more to the south and east, meaning it is shielded from the most intense lake-effect snow. The terrain of the Finger Lakes, with its valleys and the protection offered by the surrounding hills, means that many of the snow bands lose strength before reaching the area.
4. Influence of Northern Pennsylvania
Northern Pennsylvania, particularly areas like Erie and the Appalachian Mountains, is more likely to experience significant snowfall due to both lake-effect snow from Lake Erie and the upslope snow effect. The higher elevation and proximity to the Great Lakes in this region allow for more consistent snowfall throughout the winter. As the wind pushes moisture-laden air from the lakes, the air is forced upwards by the mountains, causing more precipitation in the form of snow.
The Finger Lakes region, by comparison, is lower in elevation and more shielded from these upslope effects, resulting in less frequent and less intense snowfall. The Finger Lakes’ climate is more moderate, and although snow can still fall, it is generally less persistent or heavy than in northern Pennsylvania or along the lakeshores of Buffalo and Rochester.
All this meteorology means….
Finger Lakes Wine Country gets less snow than Buffalo, Rochester, or northern Pennsylvania because of its inland location, further from the direct influence of lake-effect snow caused by the Great Lakes. The region’s rolling hills and valleys shield it from the worst of the lake-effect snow, and the milder temperatures due to the distance from the lakes further reduce snowfall. Additionally, northern Pennsylvania’s higher elevations and proximity to the Great Lakes make it more prone to consistent snowfall, while the Finger Lakes region experiences a more moderate winter climate overall.
So, even though our lakes—Cayuga, Seneca, and Keuka—are “great,” they are not large enough to make a significant impact on snowfall amounts. So, if you hear about blizzards in upstate New York, they’re likely NOT referring to Finger Lakes Wine Country, so don’t let a few snow flurries keep you from visiting!
A Year-Round Destination
Finger Lakes Wine Country offers a distinctive climate that changes beautifully through each season, providing unique experiences year-round. Whether you are drawn to the bud break of spring, serene lakes and rivers in summer, the snowy charm of winter, or the vibrant foliage of autumn, you’ll find plenty to explore in this breathtaking corner of New York. Here’s what to expect from the weather and how to dress during each season.
Spring
(April – May)
Spring in the Finger Lakes is a time of renewal, where nature comes alive after the cold winter months. Average daytime temperatures range from 50°F to 70°F, but evenings can be quite chilly, often dipping into the 30s or 40s. It’s a time when the grapevines begin to bud, and the local flora—tulips, daffodils, and lilacs—brighten the landscape with color.
What to Wear: Light layers are key. A light sweater or long-sleeved shirt under a jacket will keep you comfortable during the day, but don’t forget a heavier jacket or a warm sweater for the evening chill. Comfortable shoes for walking or exploring wineries are also recommended, as the terrain can be uneven, especially around the lake.
Summer
(June – August)
Summer in the Finger Lakes is a true highlight, with warm, pleasant weather ideal for outdoor activities. Daytime highs typically range from 70°F to 80°F, with occasional hot spells pushing into the 90s. The area enjoys long, sunny days with cool, breezy evenings, especially near the water. The lakes sparkle under the summer sun, and outdoor festivals, boat tours, and wine tastings are in full swing.
What to Wear: During the day, lightweight clothing, such as shorts, breathable shirts, and a hat, is perfect for staying cool. Don’t forget sunglasses and sunscreen, as the sun can be strong, especially during midday. A light jacket or sweater might come in handy for cooler evenings by the lakes and rivers, and comfortable sandals or shoes are ideal for walking around festivals or the small towns, but don’t forget your hiking shoes and swimsuits for outdoor adventures!
Fall
(September – November)
Fall is an incredibly popular time to visit Finger Lakes Wine Country! The weather is crisp and cool, with daytime temperatures ranging from the 50s to the 60s°F, and evenings can drop to the 30s or 40s. The region’s famous fall foliage reaches its peak, painting the hillsides with vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. The harvest season brings an aroma of freshly picked grapes and the chance to explore apple orchards, pumpkin patches, and U-pick farms.
What to Wear: As temperatures fluctuate, dressing in layers is essential. A warm jacket, a scarf, and a pair of gloves will be useful, especially on chilly mornings or evenings. A sturdy pair of boots is also recommended, as you’ll likely want to explore the vineyards or hike the picturesque trails near the lake. A cozy sweater or fleece can help keep you warm as you enjoy the beautiful outdoor scenery.
Winter
(December – March)
Winter in the Finger Lakes brings a tranquil beauty to Finger Lakes Wine Country, with snow-covered landscapes and a quiet ambiance. Temperatures can vary significantly, ranging from sub-zero conditions to highs near 40°F. The area sees plenty of snowfall, which creates perfect conditions for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and other winter activities. While many of the area’s attractions slow down, it’s an ideal time for a peaceful retreat with fewer crowds. You can enjoy cozy firesides at local inns or indulge in winter wine tastings, including the special Ice Wine produced from frozen grapes.
What to Wear: Winter weather can be unpredictable, so make sure to pack heavy-duty cold-weather clothing. A thick, insulated coat, gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat are essential for staying comfortable outside. Thermal layers and waterproof boots will help you stay warm and dry during outdoor activities, especially if you plan to hike or snowshoe around the lake. A pair of wool socks and a cozy sweater will also keep you comfortable when you head indoors to enjoy a glass of wine by the fire.

These scenic drives will take you past some of our region’s charming towns, antique shops, museums, our lakes, wine trails, breweries, cideries, distilleries and more.
Along the way pay attention to farm stops in the countryside, many of which offer U-Pick experiences, and roadside farm stands to pick up some of the best local ingredients to take home with you.
Seneca Lake Scenic Byway
One of the most well-known scenic drives in Finger Lakes Wine Country is the Seneca Lake Scenic Byway running along the east side of Seneca Lake. This is the perfect drive to get a taste of the Finger Lakes as you’ll be passing wineries, cideries, distilleries, breweries, restaurants, and farms. This makes for great stops along the way as well as many great places to catch one of our beautiful Finger Lakes sunsets overlooking Seneca Lake.
We recommend seeing our small town guide to Watkins Glen for ideas of what to see and explore here before starting off on your scenic adventure up the east side of Seneca Lake up to Lodi Marine State Park where you can picnic, watch a gorgeous sunset, and swim and enjoy the pebble beach in the warmer months. (Just note that you will have to pay an $8 per car parking fee at Lodi Marine State Park.)
You’ll be driving along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail which is dotted with wineries that offer more incredible views and passing by one of the best roadside attractions in New York State, Hector Falls, which cascades right along a bridge you’ll be driving on Route 414.
The wineries close at around 5:00 pm, so for a great sunset view we recommend stopping at Two Goats Brewing or Grist Iron Brewing for views and a drink.
Penn Yan to Dresden
A hidden gem and one of the most scenic drives in the Finger Lakes is the road that follows the Keuka Outlet Trail. This trail follows an outlet that connects Keuka Lake into Seneca Lake.
The Keuka Outlet Trail is a 7-mile path that is easily walkable and bike-friendly. You can drive along the Outlet Road for several different access points. But the drive itself is also pretty, especially during the fall foliage and spring months.
Starting in Penn Yan on East Elm Street which turns into Outlet Road, you will be leaving town and pass through a wooded road that has a few different stops where you can get out and enjoy a section of the Keuka Outlet Trail.
If you’re looking to stretch your legs, be sure to park and walk towards Seneca Mills Falls or Cascade Falls. There is a parking area that gives you access to the trail with signs that point you in the direction for both waterfalls. Seneca Mills is the quickest to access with a 5-7 minute walk.
Continuing the scenic drive towards Dresden you will pass beautiful farmscapes on Hopeton Road.

Owego to Corning
Driving between the charming towns of Owego to Corning offers some picturesque countryside views. Be sure to read our small town guides to both Owego and Corning for ideas of what to do in each of these beautiful destinations. Not only are these great places to stop and stay a bit longer, there are also great opportunities to check out the shops, restaurants, cafes, and cultural attractions.
Leaving Owego on Route 96 you will pass through the rural rolling hills driving along the Catatonk Creek passing some of the region’s most beautiful farmland.
Continuing on Route 96 through Spencer you will continue to pass more scenic farms on Route 223 before getting on the Interstate 86-West with breathtaking views of the Chemung River before arriving in Corning.
Elmira to Jerusalem Hill
One of the shorter scenic drives to enjoy starts in the city of Elmira and wanders up Jerusalem Hill Road where you will be rewarded with views of Elmira’s historic landscape along the Chemung River, continuing into more countryside farmscapes and wooded scenery headed towards Maple Hill State Forest.
For a breathtaking sunset experience with dinner, be sure to make a reservation at the Hill Top Inn which opens for dinner and has a large outdoor seating area and patio overlooking the valley and the town of Elmira and the Chemung River below.
The restaurant at Hill Top Inn doesn’t open until 5:00 pm, so this is only an evening experience. We recommend calling ahead and making a reservation to enjoy the breathtaking views from their prime location.

Along Keuka Lake
Drive around the Crooked Lake for some of the most majestic scenery Finger Lakes Wine Country has to offer. We recommend seeing our small town guides to the villages of Hammondsport and Penn Yan for ideas of what to see and explore here before starting off on your scenic adventure.
Exploring the West side of Keuka Lake you have three different route options to choose from, The Lower Road (West Lake Road/ Route 54A) along the shores of the lake, Middle Road which connects to Route 76 and offers views of the lake and vineyards from a higher point, and The Upper Road (Greyton H. Taylor Memorial Drive).
For a bite to eat, try stopping at Seneca Farms(open seasonally from the first Friday in March through the end of October) in Penn Yan to take to Keuka Lake State Park where you can picnic with waterfront views.

Craft brewing has exploded so much in the region in the last decade that there are a variety of breweries offering an array of experiences. Some of our breweries even offer lodging. Penn Yan
The quaint and beautiful Village of Penn Yan, NY was named after its early Pennsylvania and Yankee settlers. This is where you can find independently- and locally- owned cafés, shops, restaurants, and taverns along Main Street’s historic early 19th century buildings.
The Laurentide Inn is the result of transforming a 200-year-old private residence and carriage house barn into five guest suites. In the back of the house, you’ll find their brewery and the pub.
Two other Penn Yan breweries to visit are Abandon Brewing Co. and Climbing Bines Hop Farm & Craft Ale Company. Abandon Brewing Co. is a geothermal-powered craft brewery located in a reused farmhouse overlooking Keuka Lake. You can enjoy tastings in the taproom, a pint in the beer hall, or out on the deck overlooking the grapes, apples, and hops of Abandon Acres. Climbing Bines Craft Ale Company is one of New York State’s first farm breweries. They specialize in small-batch, hand-crafted ales brewed on-site with the freshest estate-grown hops and locally-harvested barley.
If you’d rather sip cider head to WortHog Cidery in Penn Yan. Where they use a special blend of New York Apples to make their ciders and lightly carbonate them for a finishing touch and unique taste.
A few miles away in Keuka Park, NY you’ll find LyonSmith Brewing Co. This brewery has a mission “to make beer that is worth drinking, a company that is worth working for, and a community that is worth living in.”
while sipping on one of the 20 craft beers, ciders, and sours on-tap. Relax in the newly remodeled tasting room or unwind on the deck for live performances weekly.
If you’re looking for a classic whiskey look no further than Dundee’s O’Begley Distillery. Which produces Traditional Irish Style Whiskey, using a small-batch pot still process.
There is a new brewery that just opened (in the building that used to be Starkey’s Lookout) called Tin Barn Brewing. It’s a brewery based in the Hudson Valley that just opened their first Finger Lakes Wine Country location.
Hammondsport
The picturesque village of Hammondsport, NY is home to Pleasant Valley Wine Company the oldest winery in Finger Lakes Wine Country. They survived the prohibition years by selling sacramental and medicinal wine while sitting on an inventory of 70,000 cases that couldn’t be sold.
At The Brewery of Broken Dreams, their ales are traditionally inspired and uniquely rendered from a combination of resources provided by the naturally abundant farmland, and the desire, knowledge, and skill of local farmers and our brewers.
Finger Lakes Beer Company is a New York State Farm Brewery offering tasting flights, half-pints, pints, and pitchers of a dozen styles of ales all brewed on-site. Be sure to try their Vanilla Porter which won the 2015 Best Craft Beer in New York State at the TAP New York.
The family-run Keuka Brewing Company was the first microbrewery on Keuka Lake. They pride themselves on producing unique small artisan batches of great beer by experimenting in different styles and tastes.
Steuben Brewing Company is a farm brewery that produces New York State-labeled beer. They strive to make great beer that supports local farmers by utilizing ingredients that are grown and produced in New York State.
Krooked Tusker Distillery is a small batch, farm distillery on Keuka Lake that produces handcrafted libations made from locally-sourced materials.
Watkins Glen
From the 19 waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park to “The Glen”, Grand Prix Festival, and International Motor Racing Research Center there are so many reasons to visit Watkins Glen, NY. Beer is also a big deal in this area. Offering two unique lodging options and more breweries, cideries, and distilleries than any other area.
Watkins Brewery Vacation Rentals is located in a historic building that once housed several businesses including a couple of different breweries. The refurbished building now houses seven vacation rental homes. Pontoon boats, jet skis, kayaks, and bikes are also available for rent on-site for fun Seneca Lake water activities!
Head six minutes north to travel back in time and across the pond to a traditional British Pub. Seneca Lake Brewing Company & The Beerocracy in Rock Stream, NY is the states only dedicated Cask Ale brewery. Adding to the authenticity of the turn of the century British Pub, the Beerocracy Pub offers a cell phone-free bar environment enabling people to truly enjoy the atmosphere and environment. Secure Cubbie’s are available behind the bar to store mobile devices whilst in the bar area and there is a $10 fine if you are caught with your mobile device. All fines are donated to a local charity quarterly.
You can find both Rock Stream Brewery and Rock Stream Distilling on Rock Stream Vineyards which is Seneca Lake’s only licensed Grappa and Grape Brandy distillery. Owner and operator Dr. Mark Karasz Spent three years in Italy learning wine and Grappa production. After returning from Italy, he founded Rock Stream Vineyards and began growing his own grapes, making and bottling wine, brandy, Grappa, and ports.
Head 15-minutes north to Miles Craft Ales at Miles Wine Cellars in Himrod, NY where they are pouring: Calisto Pale Ale, Scottish Lure Ale, Bonfire Brew Ale, and Io Milk Stout.
If you like a historic stay with a theme look no further than the Seneca Lodge Craft Brewing in Watkins Glen. The main lodge was built for the first Grand Prix in The Glen, in 1948. This racing theme can be seen throughout the venue. Suspended from the ceiling in the Tavern Room are Tires from NASCAR champions. Behind the bar, laurel wreaths from the Formula 1 races of the 1970s.
Not only are there cabins, a-frames, and motel rooms on the property there is also a restaurant.
Nearby you’ll find Rooster Fish Brewing Pub, one of New York’s first official farm breweries offering passionately brewed, uniquely world-class craft ale from locally-sourced ingredients. There are at least five craft-style small batch beers and up to four seasonal and special brews. Sample, order a pint, and even take some home with you.
Launched in 1997 on-site at Wagner Vineyards in Lodi, NY, Wagner Valley Brewing Company provides beer-lovers with a variety of award-winning craft-brewed beers. Wagner Valley Brewing Company currently has 9 draft lines with styles rotating often and ranging from light to dark, bitter to sweet. They also produce an all-natural, non-alcoholic, real Draft Root Beer.
Nearby in Hector, NY is Scale House Brewery where you’ll find quality craft beer and delicious gourmet pizza. Along with Lucky Hare Brewing Company which creates handcrafted beer that reflects their passion for great beer and the Finger Lakes and its community.
The Inn at Grist Iron in Burdett, NY is the only lodging in the region to feature an onsite craft brewery (Grist Iron Brewing Company) with house-brewed beer, BBQ, live music, as well as easy access to local wineries, breweries, restaurants, and hiking/nature trails. Choose from 4 rooms in their traditional-style 1860s Farmhouse or stay in one of 10 spacious suites in The Lodge, which offers rustic, yet modern accommodations including their Dog-Friendly King Room.
You’ll also find Two Goats Brewing and Finger Lakes Distilling in Burdett, NY. Two Goats Brewing is an easy-going gathering place to drink stellar beer, listen to live original music, and enjoy time with friends. It was also built in a renovated 19th-century barn with a sweeping view of Seneca Lake and is powered by solar. Finger Lakes Distilling is the premier New York craft distillery, creating high-quality whiskey, gin, brandy, grappa, and liqueurs. They hand-craft their products using local grains, farm-fresh fruits, and time-honored techniques to produce artisan spirits.
Corning
Corning, New York is a small town with a big reputation. Known for its glass, it is home to 169-year-old Corning Incorporated which has been creating glass cookware since CorningWare (1958), and Pyrex (1915) and is now a center of innovation developing everything from the glass on your cell phone to the glass used in vaccine vials. The town is now known for the Corning Museum of Glass which has been featured on Netflix’s Blown Away, a competition series featuring the art of glassmaking.
Located on historic Market Street is Corning’s first brewpub, Market Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant. With six fresh beers brewed right on-premise, a bier-garten, rooftop seating, and a delectable “upscale” menu, Market Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant serves only the finest food and drink.
Carey’s Brew House is a two-story Brewery Restaurant with a wide range of local and international beers on tap, including in-house brewing of our own recipes, occasional guest brewers, and featured local breweries.
Iron Flamingo Brewery is Corning’s first brewery to bottle beer for distribution. They support local businesses by allowing food to be ordered in and hosting local food vendors regularly. Iron Flamingo Brewery uses local farmers for their hops and malt, helping to sustain the rich agriculture of the region. They are proud to utilize solar power for the brewing process.
Liquid Shoes Brewing is a small batch brewery located in the heart of Corning’s Gaffer District.
Paying homage to the industry that defined Hornell, New York is RailHead Brewing Company. Located where hundreds of rail cars once stood eager for far-off places visit this brewery to be transported to another time.
Cider Creek Hard Cider is made on a family farm nestled in the hills of Canisteo, NY. The company was created in 2013 and turned a family recipe and home brewing passion into a mission to produce high-quality, craft cider. Every batch is handmade with the finest blend of 100% New York State apples.
Elmira
Also known as Mark Twain Country, the American author spent his summers in Elmira, New York for more than 20 years. You can even visit the Mark Twain Study and Exhibit on the beautiful campus of Elmira College. Where he penned some of his most famous pieces of literature including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and more.
Upstate Brewing Company in Elmira, NY is a production micro-brewery that produces fresh, local, and unique beers. Which are currently on tap and in cans at restaurants, bars, and stores in the majority of the counties in New York state.
Eight minutes away in Horseheads, NY is Horseheads Brewing. This family-owned local brewery has the goal to hand-craft the highest quality beer with the finest ingredients, then deliver it at affordable prices. Check out their satellite location located on the marina in Watkins Glen this summer.
Head south to Diversion Brewing Co. a small 3-barrel craft brewery in Chemung, NY with a wide variety of beers available to please any palate.
The second cidery on our list is Eve’s Cidery in Van Etten, NY. Eve’s is an orchard-based cidery producing Traditional Method ciders. With two orchard sites perched on either side of the geological divide between the Southern Finger Lakes and the Northern Appalachian Plateau. The primary impulse behind their cider making is to find an answer to the question: Can you taste a place?
Owego
In Owego, New York you’ll find stately Victorian homes and 19th-century architecture, impressive bookstores, and some of the best antique shops in the region.
10 minutes away in Apalachin, NY is Waterman’s Distillery, an innovative producer of all-natural grain-neutral spirits and whiskeys. This distillery is part of America’s original moonshine trail established by bootleggers traveling east and west during the prohibition era.

On the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, you’ll find Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery and Glenora Wine Cellars. Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery in Lodi, New York was the first winery on the east side of Seneca Lake. Here you’ll find a winery, brewery, and restaurant with a stunning Seneca Lake view. The kids can choose between smooth and creamy root beer or Blush Grape Juice. While you choose between their estate-grown Riesling, Chardonnay, and more.
Glenora Wine Cellars in Dundee, New York was the first winery on Seneca Lake and has a lot to offer a visiting family. This winery resort has more to offer than just delicious wine slushies, including a restaurant and a thirty-room Inn on site. Making it a great place to make your home base. The Inn at Glenora offers stunning views and comfortable accommodations. At Veraisons Restaurant your family can enjoy regional cuisine, featuring seasonal, locally sourced menus.
If you’re looking for more wine slushies visit Swedish Hill Winery in Romulus on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. Here the kiddos can choose between two grape juices. The Concord Grape juice is thick, sweet, and tart and their White Grape Juice is sweet and dry. While you sip on your slushie the kids can pet Doobie, the winery’s donkey, and say hi to Sven, the miniature horse.

Snow Sports

Tanglewood Nature Center’s trails, in Elmira, New York are open to the public all year long. In the winter, they make for a wonderful snowshoeing experience. Tanglewood has two separate trail systems, Gleason Meadows and Personius Woods. The trail systems are not connected, but they are a very short distance by car drive from each other. The Keuka Outlet Trail offers seven miles of trails stretching between Keuka and Seneca Lakes from Penn Yan to Dresden, NY. Snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are very popular here in the winter.
The Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector, New York is another great location for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.

Winter is easily one of the most underrated seasons to visit the region and one of the quietest, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of outdoor activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Here are just a few of the incredible outdoor activities to enjoy in Finger Lakes Wine Country in the winter.
Snowshoe Rentals
A fun adventurous activity fit for the whole family in winter is snowshoeing on the trails at Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum in Elmira. The trails are open to the public from dawn to dusk, however if you don’t have your own snowshoes or crampons you can rent snowshoes for both children and adults from Tanglewood Nature Center during their hours of operation.
Visitors typically spend anywhere from one to three hours exploring the trails and there are trail options for beginners to advanced snowshoe enthusiasts. Please call ahead of your visit as their seasonal hours are different and the facilities are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Snowmobile & Cross Country Ski Trails
Two favorite wintertime sports to enjoy after a fresh dumping of snow is snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The Keuka Outlet Trail offers seven miles bordering the Keuka Outlet stretching between Keuka and Seneca Lakes from Penn Yan to Dresden, NY.
Along the trail, for both winter activities you will be rewarded with the serene nature surroundings as well as gorgeous views of Seneca Mills Falls.

Maple Syrup
Another end of winter time favorite to enjoy in the region is tasting a bit of nature’s candy during maple syrup season! Many of our region’s farms and orchards produce pure maple syrup and you can not only sample this season’s tasty syrup, but also bring it back home to your kitchen.
Be sure to call ahead any of the farms or markets in advance to ensure they are open during your visit, many have special seasonal hours.
Winter in Wine Country is one of the most exciting times to enjoy some of our award winning wines from our region. While enjoying a tasting at one of our wineries requires a little planning ahead as some tasting rooms are only open seasonally and those that do have wine tasting available often have a different schedule for the slower, winter months.
We advise to call ahead to any wineries you plan on visiting before your visit to ensure they are open during that time/day.
You can still enjoy some of our wines without visiting our cellars and wineries by picking up bottles at the winery retail shops or any of our local wine retailers who are open year round.
During the winter months, you may want to enjoy some of our specialty wines from the colder months including ice wines which are a type of dessert wine which are known for being sweeter produced from grapes that have been frozen still on the vine.
Another wintertime favorite for drinking are fortified wines like Sherry or Ports known for their higher alcohol content. Winemakers add a neutral grape spirit, like brandy, to the wine which is where you get the elevated alcohol content from and is often consumed in the colder months.
There’s also something so nice about a good red wine on a cold winter day or night which our region has a great selection of red wines.
Winter Horseback Riding
Just outside one of Watkins Glen you can enjoy winter horseback riding at Painted Bar Stables who offers horseback riding experiences year round by appointment only.

Not for the faint of heart, but another adventurous winter activity in the region for those who love the chilly wilderness is primitive backcountry camping in Italy Hill State Forest in Branchport off of Keuka Lake.
This style of camping offers no amenities and are for the serious outdoor enthusiasts who like to camp with everything on your back and the winter backdrop and crisp cool air make for an unforgettable experience. Anyone participating in primitive camping in the area must follow these guidelines from New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation.

While there are many delicious chocolate shops to explore in the region. Corning’s Chocolate Trail is where you can discover delectable chocolate delights like handcrafted chocolates, luxurious chocolate-scented soap, and dark chocolate balsamico.
Some of the places you should visit include Market Street Coffee & Tea. This is the perfect place to begin with some freshly roasted chocolate coffees to take home or enjoy during the 5-block self-guided tour. Be sure to stop at Dimitri’s Confectionary Treats for the homemade Ghirardelli treats they specialize in. Don’t forget to visit Slammin’ Jammin’ BBQ for their chocolate soda ice cream float. Did you know that ice cream sundaes were invented in the late 19th century because selling an ice cream float on Sundays was illegal?

Since the 1950’s Finger Lakes locals have been getting scoops of happiness from Seneca Farms in Penn Yan. With over 50 homemade ice cream flavors and a custard calendar, it’s no surprise this retro ice cream shop has been the jewel of this quaint town for so long.
In Watkins Glen, you’ll find Colonial Pottery & Creamery where you can shop for pottery while you enjoy your double scoop of homemade gourmet dairy or vegan ice cream.
Engage in the Elements
By land, air, or lake in Finger Lakes Wine Country you can engage in the elements easily. If you’re looking to keep your feet on the ground there are plenty of activities to do inside and outside. Explore the Finger Lakes Trail System which offers 1,000 miles of hiking from the Pennsylvania-New York border in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskill Forest Preserve. Be sure to visit a trail that ends at one of the many spectacular waterfalls or other hidden gems.

Rent paddleboards, kayaks, pontoon boats, or jet skis for the day at Keuka Watersports for a low-key and casual daytime activity on Keuka Lake. Find something similar on Seneca Lake at Anchor Inn & Marina and Summit to Stream Adventures, both located in Watkins Glen.
Best Wineries for Non-Drinkers
As you can see there are plenty of activities for non-drinkers to enjoy in Finger Lakes Wine Country. However, there are those circumstances when there is a non-drinker at a winery or wine tasting. That person could be pregnant and open to enjoying the adventure without imbibing. Sober or simply the designated driver, the following wineries have non-alcoholic options that make it worth the visit for non-drinkers.
Swedish Hill Winery in Romulus on the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail makes two grape juices. The Concord Grape juice is thick, sweet, tart and similar to Welch’s. Their Diamond Grape Juice is sweet but a bit drier than the red.
Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery is in Lodi on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Founded in 1979 by Bill Wagner, this winery was the first on the east side of Seneca Lake. Wagner has been winning awards for their estate-grown Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc wines ever since.
They have a winery and brewery along with a restaurant with a stunning lakeside view. You’ll find smooth and creamy root beer on the brewery end of Wagner. While the winery produces a Blush Grape Juice that is sweet and a tad dry.
The Three Brothers Wineries and Estates located in Geneva includes three different wineries, a cafe, and the War Horse microbrewery on site. The walls of the War Horse are adorned with photos and memorabilia of friends and families who serve in the military. Here you will find four different Iron Heart Craft Soda flavors; Root Beer, Orange Cream, Black Cherry, Lemon Lime, and Orange Cream Soda
Keuka Lake is known as the “Crooked Lake” because it’s in the shape of a letter “Y”. At Finger Lakes Beer Company in Hammondsport you can try M&W Root Beer which has a distinct taste, it’s not as sweet as others on this list.
You’ll also find Heron Hill Winery in Hammondsport on the Keuka Lake Wine Trail. Where you can enjoy their Heron Hill Concord Grape Juice which is mixed with a touch of NY apple cider.
Mark Twain Country
One of the most famous figures in American literature, Samuel Clemens, better known by his pen name Mark Twain, spent his summers in Elmira for more than 20 years. Learn more when you visit the Mark Twain Study and Exhibit on the beautiful campus of Elmira College. Twain spent his summers in Elmira and where he penned some of his most famous pieces of literature in the octagonal study, including The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi, and AConnecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court.
Elmira’s Storied Past
Learn more about Twain’s time in Elmira and the area’s history when you visit the Chemung Valley History Museum. Just down the road is the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp. Dubbed “Hellmira” for its high death rate, the Confederate prison camp has been reconstructed, along with barracks that were created with the aid of original drawings and photos. The prisons were buried by a formerly enslaved man named John W. Jones. As sexton for Woodlawn Cemetery, one of John W. Jones’ primary roles was to bury each deceased Confederate soldier from the Elmira Prison Camp. Of the 2,973 prisoners who Jones buried, only seven are listed as unknown. Jones kept such precise records that on December 7, 1877, the federal government declared the burial site a national cemetery. Jones was an active agent in the Underground Railroad and aided in the escape of 800 freedom seekers. Learn more when you visit the John W. Jones Museum.
Arnot Art Museum
The Arnot Art Museum houses a permanent collection of 17th-19th century European paintings, 20th-century American art, and contemporary art from the 21st century. Located in a historic Greek-Revival mansion from 1833, the Arnot Art Museum was founded by local banker Matthias Hallenback Arnot, who gifted his collection, home, and endowment to Elmira in 1910. The Arnot Art Museum opened to the public in 1913, and since that time, the Museum has grown to become one of the leading cultural institutions in the region.

Community Arts of Elmira
Located on the Elmira Creative Corridor, the Community Arts of Elmira is more than a community center, it’s a center for creative expression. Connect with the history and community of Elmira through events, workshops, satellite galleries, and educational classes as well as with the public art program Elmira Infinite Canvas. Community Arts of Elmira is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the National Park Service Network to Freedom Underground Railroad.

171 Cedar Arts Center
For more than five decades, 171 Cedar Arts Center has been the artistic and cultural hub for the greater Corning area. Enriching lives by providing accessible arts education, collaborative outreach programming, free exhibitions of regional artists, and live performances. The Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes supports regional artists, making the Southern Finger Lakes an arts haven filled with talented and creative people, inspiring a vibrant and accessible multi-county arts scene. This regional organization empowers artists and encourages arts advocacy, fosters creativity and economic vitality, creates diverse connections and collaborations, and champions innovation and equity within the arts to cultivate a dynamic community.
Arts Center of Yates County
The Arts Center of Yates County is a nonprofit community arts center with a mission to enrich the lives of Yates County residents, artists, and visitors by providing opportunities to actively participate in the arts. The Arts Center includes the Flick Gallery, the Rosenfeld Studio upstairs—where the bulk of the Center’s workshops are held—and Sunny Point, a seasonal facility on the east side of Keuka Lake that includes housing for visiting instructors and artist residencies, a studio barn for workshops and events, and a lakeside pottery studio.

Arnot Art Museum
Located in Elmira, New York in a historic Greek-Revival mansion from 1833, is the Arnot Art Museum. Founded by local banker Matthais Hallenback Arnot who gifted the museum to the city of Elmira. The museum houses a permanent collection of 17th-19th century European paintings, 20th-century American art, and contemporary art from the 21st century. In addition to the permanent and original art collection, you can also experience their temporary exhibitions featuring artwork from all over the world.

The Rockwell Museum
The Rockwell Museum is an official Smithsonian Affiliate, the first in the state of New York outside of New York City. Here you’ll find a mix of contemporary Native American art from landscape paintings to bronze sculptures to modernist pieces that represent the people, land, and ideas that shaped America through the work of American artists housed in a 19th-century historic Old City Hall building.
Visit The Rockwell Museum Store and take home some incredible artisan-made pieces. Including artful USA-made, Native-made, and fair-trade products. Corning Museum of Glass
Dive into over 3,500 years of glass-making history at the Corning Museum of Glass. Explore the history, art, and science behind glass through the museum’s collection of nearly 50,000 objects related to glass. Enjoy live narrated glass-making demonstrations, or try your hand at making your own glass in the Innovation Center. A typical museum visit requires 3 to 4 hours but could easily be longer.
After visiting the museum, stop in The Shops at The Corning Museum of Glass to see the beautiful original works of art by more than 200 emerging and established artists. From jewelry and accessories to home decor, the Shops’ selection of 15,000 items offers a piece at every price point.
Glenn H. Curtiss Museum
Those who consider motorcycles, bicycles, boats, and aircraft art, must visit the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, New York. Here, you’ll experience a priceless collection of artifacts and learn the history of the “Father of Naval Aviation,” and the “Fastest Man on Earth,” local legend Glenn H. Curtiss.

Elmira Street Painting Festival
The Elmira Street Painting Festival is a family fun festival hosted by Elmira Downtown Development every July to celebrate the rich local arts community. Stroll through our historic downtown and masterpieces evolving right before your eyes as artists take to the streets with chalk in hand. Local and regional artists use the pavement as a canvas to transform downtown Elmira streets. The streets become a living art gallery.
Browse the fine regional crafts and artwork of numerous vendors. Sample the varied tastes of local restaurants, step into a pop-up gallery, move to the rhythm of live music. Personal squares are also available for those who are interested in creating a masterpiece.
There’s also a Kid’s Kanvas area where aspiring young artists can be creative. In addition, there will be face-painting, ice cream, popcorn, and many other kid’s activities for them to enjoy. Come for the day or the weekend!

The Keuka Arts Festival is a fine art and skilled craft show held annually on the second weekend in June, in Penn Yan, New York. The mission is to foster community in the Keuka Lake area and promote the nurturing and financial support of the local Arts. Since 2007 Palettes of Keuka (PKAT) scholarship has celebrated the beauty of Keuka Lake through the talented work of local artists. This Chamber-funded event raises funds to donate to a student of Hammondsport High School who is pursuing art education.

What Can You Do For Free in FLWC?
Go For a Hike
The Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum in Elmira, New York offers free access to over 10 miles of hiking trails, exhibits, and programs on environmental education. It houses over 40 live animals, both native and exotic. Tanglewood Nature Center is committed to local preservation efforts. The trails here offer hiking year-round and winter activities including cross-country skiing which allow you to experience the natural beauty of the Chemung Valley.
The Keuka Outlet Trail starts in the small town of Penn Yan and has more than seven miles of scenic trails, perfect for cycling, running, or leisurely walks. Along the way you’ll find Seneca Mills Falls and the Cascade Mills Falls In the winter snowmobiling and cross-country skiing are very popular here.
For scenic, wooded hiking trails head to Italy Hill State Forest in Branchport, New York, or trek along an abandoned railroad path from Montour Falls to Horseheads on the Catharine Valley Trail. The Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector, New York has over 30 miles of interconnecting trails that traverse gorges, ravines, pastures, and woodlands. It’s the only National Forest in New York State and is another great location for snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing during the winter.

Go Bird Watching
Our natural landscapes are a haven for wildlife and natural habitats, including great bird-watching opportunities. In the spring, birders can find great blue heron, sandhill crane, osprey, snow geese, wild turkeys, many species of songbirds, and even bald eagles.
Finger Lakes Wine Country boasts some of the best farmland in the state, so finding the freshest produce of the season, handicrafts, baked goods, local ingredients, pantry items, and seasonings is easy to do at a local Farmers Market.
From season markets to year-round farm stores here you’ll find something for every season. For over 35 years Windmill Farm & Craft Market in Penn Yan, New York has been offering food, produce, and handicrafts on Saturdays, from April through mid-December. With over 200 vendors Windmill Farm & Craft Market is the largest of the farmers markets in Finger Lakes Wine Country.
Go For a Drive
One of the best ways to see the sweeping views the region is famous for is a scenic drive. The most well-known scenic drive in Finger Lakes Wine Country is the Seneca Lake Scenic Byway running along the east side of Seneca Lake. You’ll be passing wineries, cideries, distilleries, breweries, restaurants, and farms. Most of which are great places to catch one of our stunning Finger Lakes sunsets overlooking Seneca Lake. Take a Dip
During the warmer months of summer, the best way to cool off is to enjoy a day at the lake swimming, paddling, or kayaking. There are several beaches for swimming in the region, including Champlin Beach in Hammondsport, New York, and the shores at Keuka Lake State Park in Penn Yan. Along with hiking trails and picnic areas, there is no shortage of lake activities to enjoy at Keuka Lake State Park. Keuka Lake is one of the warmer water lakes in the region.
Clute Memorial Park in Watkins Glen has a scenic swimming beach on Seneca Lake. Seneca Lake is not only the largest of the Finger Lakes it’s also the deepest lake within New York State.
Chase Waterfalls
Visiting the region’s iconic waterfalls is a quintessential part of the Finger Lakes Wine Country experience. Our region has a reputation for having over 50 waterfalls which are a visual delight waiting to be explored. Walking through Watkins Glen State Park you can enjoy an enchanting hike through the two-mile Gorge Trail, which boasts 19 cascading waterfalls.
With over 120 wineries in Finger Lakes Wine Country, how do you choose which ones to visit? What should you be prepared for when visiting a winery? What should you expect and plan for during a day of wine tasting? And when is the best time to visit Finger Lakes Wine Country?
How Do You Get Around? While wine tasting, a designated driver is a must. If you decide to taste wine and get behind the wheel, be sure to spit the wine out into the dump buckets that are provided at each winery. Another great option is hiring a transportation company for a worry-free day.
Which Wineries Should I Visit? With so many to choose from, how do you know which ones are right for you? First, plan on visiting just two to three wineries in any given day. Plan for time to become familiar with the wines and enjoy your tasting. Many wineries have great gift shops and cafes to explore. And make sure to allow time for travel between wineries. In order to decide what wineries you want to visit, a little research is necessary. Do you like whites or reds? Sweet or dry? Are you interested in fruit wine or ice wine? With so many options, it can become overwhelming, but rest assured, the information is out there for you to familiarize yourself with. Start by going through our list of wineries in the region. Decide which region you want to visit or variety you’d like to taste and you’ll have your wine tasting itinerary in no time!
When is the Best Time of Year to Visit? Finger Lakes Wine Country, New York is a year-round destination. During the summer and fall, the wineries are the busiest, as this is peak travel season but is also a great time of year in the Finger Lakes. However, during the off-season of winter and spring, your wine tasting experience is likely to be more personal and comfortable. It is these months of the year when you are likely to speak with the owners and winemakers themselves in the tasting room. Each season has its perks. Be sure to take into consideration what you would like to do during your visit outside of wine tasting: boating and swimming? Leaf peeping and harvest festivals? Skiing and snowshoeing? Considering all of the Finger Lakes activities available should give you a great idea of when is right for your visit to Finger Lakes Wine Country.
When are the Wineries Open? In the summer and fall most of the wineries in the Finger Lakes are open seven days a week. During late/fall early winter and spring it is important that you confirm each winery’s hours as some have more limited tasting room hours, especially during the week. It is most common for wineries to open 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and close around 5:00 p.m. each day, including Sunday. Again in the summer, some wineries extend their hours to accommodate the increased number of visitors.
Do I need to make a reservation? In most cases, yes. It’s best to visit the winery’s website or give them a call to see if they require or suggest reservations. Most wineries offer seated tasting experiences with a flight of wine and some offer snacks or small bites to enjoy with your wine. Some wineries will do their best to accommodate walk-in visitors, but to ensure you have a spot, reservations are your best option. If you’re traveling in a group of six or more, reservations are almost always required.
Don’t Forget Lunch Before your day of wine tasting, be sure to have a full breakfast. This will not only give you the energy you need to make it through the day, it will make wine tasting easier and more enjoyable. For lunch, many of the wineries have areas for picnicking that offer breathtaking views of the lakes and countryside. Pick up some sandwiches at a café or deli in town and select a bottle of wine to enjoy while taking in the surrounding beauty of the Finger Lakes. Hydrate! This may seem like a given, but it is so important to drink plenty of water while touring the wineries or any of our wonderful craft beverage establishments. We promise you’ll have more fun if you feel better and hydration is key to ensuring you feel your best.

Experience the Essence of Wine with the Seven S’s of Wine Tasting
SEE the wine: the color, the clarity, and intensity.
SWIRL the glass to release the aromas.
SMELL the wine. This begins your tasting experience; discover the qualities and aromas of the wine like spicy, nutty, fruity, floral, or anything else you can use to describe what you are experiencing. There is not right or wrong answer.
SIP the wine. Take a small amount of the wine in your mouth along with a small bit of air, almost slurping the wine in – this will aerate the wine further releasing more aromas onto your palate.
SAVOR the wine. Swish the wine around, hitting every part of your mouth.
SPIT/SWALLOW the wine. It is perfectly acceptable to utilize the spit buckets, especially when you are driving from winery to winery.
SCORE the wine. Create your own scoring system and take notes. This reflects your personal experience of the wine, keep a wine journal that you can take with you to the gift shop after your tasting or to the wine store at home in the future to make your purchasing choice easy.
